Convoy from North Africa Advances Toward Gaza to Protest Blockade
A convoy comprising buses and private vehicles has departed from Tunis heading towards Gaza, aiming to highlight the ongoing Israeli blockade that restricts aid delivery. Organized independently by North African civil society groups, the convoy seeks to traverse Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt en route to the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, which remains largely closed since May 2024. The initiative coincides with the seizure of a high-profile aid flotilla by Israeli forces, including Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, in what was described as international waters.
The organizers emphasize their goal of demanding an immediate end to what they call an unjust siege on Gaza. They criticize Arab governments for insufficient efforts to resolve the 20-month conflict between Israel and Hamas. Despite Israel’s recent partial easing of restrictions—allowing some humanitarian aid into Gaza—the United Nations warns of imminent famine for over two million residents unless the blockade is fully lifted and hostilities cease.
While the convoy does not expect to reach Gaza due to ongoing restrictions, it aims to serve as a symbolic act of solidarity. Supporters in Tunisia and Algeria have shown enthusiasm, waving Palestinian flags and chanting in support of Gaza’s population. The organizers acknowledge the challenges posed by regional instability, especially in Libya where recent clashes have intensified. Nonetheless, they hope their journey will amplify calls for justice and humanitarian access.
